Ubisoft must be chuffed with Assassin's Creed Valhalla. The open world RPG has now generated over $1 billion in revenue, making it the most financially successful entry in the Assassin's Creed franchise. Back in October, it was crowned the publisher's second most profitable title ever.
Valhalla released just over a year ago, in November 2020, so this is a pretty crazy achievement. It's a single-player game, but it's regularly updated with equipment and cosmetic packs that you can purchase with real money. It's also received two premium expansions — Wrath of the Druids and The Siege of Paris — with a third expansion, Dawn of Ragnarok, launching in March. Clearly, Ubisoft's live service approach has worked wonders.
But while Valhalla is raking in the big bucks, it should be noted that Ubisoft is, reportedly, suffering from internal struggles. The pandemic, along with workplace allegations, have apparently had an impact on the company's output to the point where it's supposedly preparing a new, smaller Assassin's Creed game for release either later this year, or in 2023.
Did you think Valhalla would be this successful? Think about what you'd do with a billion dollars in the comments section below.

I never liked the Assassin's Creed games aside from Brotherhood. I am glad they are having success, however. It's always a good thing when the game industry does well.
Far Cry is the only Ubisoft series I like and I'm lukewarm on it.
I loved it, others on this forum don’t. I particularly enjoy Viking’s era history and tv shows etc, so this game particularly appealed to me. I played this well over 300 hours and can’t wait for the expansion next month.
I did however enjoy Odyssey a little bit more but that was because I loved playing Kassandra.
I imagine Valhalla did so well based on the success of Odyssey as well as lockdowns forcing people to be at home looking for things to do.
Not surprised. Loved it (not as much as Odyssey, but hard to beat Kass)... cant wait for Dawn of Ragnarok.
I quite liked Valhalla but it wasn’t as fun as Odyssey or as interesting as Origins. It did all come together at the end for a great finale though.
Well that’s depressing.
I loved playing Valhalla. I never got into the earlier creed games-but with origins, odyssey & Valhalla-I’m completely hooked on them. I also enjoy traveling through the worlds that these games have & am blown away by the beauty of them. Add in the dlc was adds an phenomenal amount of content to the base game also.
@lolwhatno It's er...it's actually XDefiant...
I thought Odyssey was better but have actually put more hours into Valhalla.
I found it boring
I gave it ten hours. And then traded it in.
It’s just too much. I know a lot of people love it, but it just exhumes all of the worst parts of open world games.
I loved Origins. I was meh on Odyssey.
It's the only one of the newest AC games I can say I really enjoyed. That said I'm really hoping that rumored small scale AC is truly happening. I'd love to see a return to form for the series.
I properly helped a bit with considering the amount of store armour and weapons i've bought haha
Sorry, I have nothing against the new concept of RPG AC in the last 3 titles... I loved Origins. But Valhalla is just so boring, side quests so stupid, main story is probably for 12 year olds, world design nothing special... Nah, just bad open world game in my opinion. It is depressing to see this.
I'm so freaking glad to read this even if it was obvious. I hope Ubisoft takes notes and don't go back to ONLY the old style AC games. It would be cool to have both. Maybe next one is stealth oriented and then after that another big open world RPG and so on.
And no NFTs! Just you look at that, Ubi...
I think in general I’m just burnt out on ubi games. FC 6 is good but I’m still having trouble finding the motivation to finish it off.
Kinda miss their left-field games like rayman and child of light tbh…
Edit - just remembered one of my most anticipated switch games is mario + rabbids 2 as the original was superb, though that’s developed with Nintendo’s supervision and using their assets so doesn’t fully count!
Well ubisoft obviously don't have to change how they operate because they're still making a killing
This news sounds more to me like Ubisoft putting themselves in the shop window.
I really, really enjoyed this game, but booooy oh boy it was too long.
@Dodoo Mario + Rabbids 2 definitely counts. One of the best games on the Switch. My understanding is that Nintendo had virtually nothing to do with the gameplay etc. and just oversaw how the characters would be used.
Ubisoft even insisted on weapon mechanics that Nintendo were a little wary of.
Loving it..i've enjoyed the last 3 creed games..i know i've played them in the wrong order as i played odyssey first, origins and then started on valhalla but i wont be revisiting the series if it returns to the original formula..
So was it game sales or additional content that made this so successful? Also could have been helped that it was one of the first titles on new generation of consoles?
I have not played it and from all the reviews and comments I wouldn’t have guessed this was the most successful Assassins Creed. Guess it means there will be a whole lot of RPG AC games with additional content to buy endlessly…
It was so liberating to unshackle myself from the wet fart this series has become. I won't be touching another AC game again, it died with Syndicate. Now it's the $1 gas station coffee equivalent to The Witcher 3's freshly roasted double shot cappuccino brewed by the town's top barista.
Bugger off ubisoft, and take your NFT's with you.
I’m really holding out for a PS5 patch of origins. Easily my favourite AC game. I’d love to give it another playthrough
@BritneyfR_ee Why ? isn't it suppose to be a good game?
Not surprising at all, but I'll be waiting for a deep discount as always.
Impossibru! Internet people told me it sucked and Ubisoft needs to do x and z for them to even consider going back to Assassin's Creed.
Loved the original series up to black flag when I then had few years away from gaming.
Reading some reddit subs and this site, seems split down middle about tge change of style and recent 3 games..boring, repetitive, world too big and sparse etc. The 1st assasins creed I enjoyed as was new, but recall it being very repetitive in terms of climb x tower, climb y tower, actuvate mission etc. But tge world, story, graphics were great.
I know of 2 chaps who love valhalla so will give them a go at some point. Seems mixed views on which 1 of 3 is best. But valhalla appealing as more 'next gen' in terms of graphics.
@__jamiie yeah I can imagine Nintendo were wary of them adding weapons at all!
Fook me one bazillion. I didn’t even consider playing this one, due to fatigue having spent time with the previous two but what’s good for the goose is good for a gander I guess… isn’t that what they say? May take a look sometime
Message send to the industry: dont invest in innovation but stick to safe established IPs and a bigger map is ALLWAYS better
@Agramonte
@Lobxyx odyssey was by far the worst of this rpg trilogy
